In 1793-1794 in France, thousands of men were bloodily executed after, at best, a summary trial in the period known to history as "The Terror". "Madame Guillotine" is a multi-player simulation of the brutal power struggle taking place in Paris at that time. This fast-action game requires skill, cunning, a knowledge of human psychology and, above all, the ability not to lose one's head! |
The players (2 - 6) representing notable personalities of the time, distribute "influence points" with the aim of capturing the support of various vital sections of society. Whilst so doing they must try to maneuver their opponents into untenable positions, deal with military and social crisis, and , meanwhile, remain on good terms with the populace. |
Comes with 6 sheets of cardstock counters (480 counters total) and 2 cardstock sheets which when put together form the game board. |

The purpose of Supplement 1 is to add Specialties and Skills, and to clarify existing material. In no way is this Supplement meant to change the present game system. |
In Book 3 - In Country, besides new specialties and skills, there are restrictions on existing material. In Book 4 - Motor Pool, the vehicle procedure has been intensified. All and any of these changes should be applied to existing characters and campaigns. Since the basic MERC system remains the same, these changes are only to add authenticity, realism, and action to your game. |

Board game covering diplomacy, military and political strategy and economics during the Renaissance. Players become merchant princes trying to alter the course of world events in return for good profits. |
Mercenary has been designed with the aim of filling two gaps in the field of wargaming. Firstly, it is a game involving diplomacy and intrigue that can be played by as few as two people, even a solitaire game being possible and, secondly, it is based on an important period of transformation from a medieval to a modern style of fighting, which has previously been neglected. This game is designed to give the atmosphere of a corrupt, money-grabbing Europe, torn by military strife, when almost everyone's first thoughts were for self-interest: truly a mercenary age. |
Mercenary covers the period of European history from the invasion of Italy by Charles VIII of France to the French Wars of Religion in 1560. The game, therefore, consists of 11 turns each 6 years in length. |
The object of the game is for the opposing players (1-5) known from now on as Merchants to try, by bribery, terror or military conquest, to amass the largest amount of money (measured in crowns) by 1560. |
Components include 22" by 21" full color mounted mapboard, 220 die cut counters, 11" by 16" diplomacy chart and rules book. |

"The Mystic Wood" was acquired by Gibsons Games and then eventually by Avalon Hill who reprinted it in 1982 (FGU is selling the original Ariel/Philmar printing which is identical in every way except for the box). This game more strongly resembles Talisman but also has some commonalties with Heroquest and Warhammer Quest. |
In this game, the players control a single knight rather than a party of adventurers. Like the Talisman game, the knights are distinct characters that have varying ratings in combat and magical ability. Each knight has his own quest to perform in order to win the game. Alternately, a knight may be able to win by slaying the King (thus replacing him) and taking possession of the Royal Castle. |
Like the Sorcerer's Cave, the board is made up of tiles which fit together. Unlike Sorcerer's Cave, however, in Mystic Wood all of the tiles are placed face down in a square pattern at the beginning of the game. The knights' entry point (the Earthly Gate) and ultimate destination (the Enchanted Gate) are placed on opposite sides of this grid. |
Like the Talisman game, the knights can increase their ability scores by slaying monsters encountered in the Mystic Wood. The knights can gain followers and possessions which aid them in their quest. |

This supplement for "The Mystic Wood" was released by Gibsons Games in 1982. Fantasy Games Unlimited had lost contact with Philmar/Ariel after having puchased a large number of copies of "The Mystic Wood" for distribution in America. Gibsons never contacted FGU about distributing the Extension. The Extension is listed in our catalog even though FGU never distributed it as a service to our customers. |
The following description was sent in by one of our customer's: "The kit adds eighteen area cards to expand the gameboard from a 5 x 9 grid to a 7 x 10 grid. There are two new knights: Astolfo (visit the four corners of The Wood) and Marfisa (starting with a Prowess of one must leave The Wood with a Prowess of six). A new spell: Mystic Thunder (all players change positions with the player on the left). Thirteen new denizens were added as well." |
