What elves, orcs and dragons are to fantasy, are intelligent (and non-intelligent) aliens to science fiction. Of course, there is lots of science fiction (even lots of excellent science fiction) which does not involve alien races, but many stories and campaigns do. However, if you are going to write or play science fiction, these aliens must of course respect scientific facts.
